ASTANGA YOGA IN DAILY LIFE
There are two approaches to this issue: you can either approach Astanga yoga as an irreducible set standard to which you apply yourseLf (with the possibility of regular failure), or you can be flexible in your practice. The latter is my preferred approach because it enables you to tailor yoga to your individual needs and makes it possible for you to keep up a consistent daily practice, even if the content varies.
So, if you can’t always practice first thing in the morning or for two hours every day, don’t give up yoga’ I have devised sequences for those beginning Asranga yoga and those who have a limited amount of time — both are adapted versions of the Primary Series
Traditionally a student must perfect each posture of the series before moving onto the next one. This provides an excellent safety device, slowing students down and ensuring each pose is thoroughly understood before the next is attempted. However, some students will simply be unable to progress beyond a certain pose if they have physical limitations, leaving them for months or years with an incomplete practice. It seems to make sense to modify poses as you go along, making the whole series more accessible to everyone.
